A ship in harbor is safe

Quote of the day:

"A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for."

John A. Shedd, 1928

When I had a "crazy" idea to move to an island, this is one of the quotes that inspired me to go onward and take that leap...

I am still loving it here. Last week around 7:00 in the morning, I chased a horse through several neighbors’ yards with a container of cooked carrots. He wasn’t interested. So I’ve just been up to normal things like that.

Here is a photo of an iguana in my yard.

When I’m not chasing around animals, I have to work to make money. We lose power here sometimes and so I will go somewhere in town to get Wifi. Last Friday I went to Polly’s, the local coffee shop. I sipped my iced chai tea latte and feverishly typed away on my laptop, answering emails and getting lost in numbers and spreadsheets. I noticed a little hint of the ‘stressed Lindsey’ starting to come out so I just took a deep breath.

My eyes were drawn to the light so I looked out the window and realized I hadn’t even stopped to notice my view. Are you kidding me? Who cares about the freaking numbers on my spreadsheet? I will try my best, but I am not that important and NIH is not going to crumble if my budget spreadsheet is not perfect by 10am. Perspective. I am just a drop in the ocean.

Look at that water.

Some special moments over the last few weeks:

  • Video-chatting, calling, texting family and friends, and receiving a few notes in the mail. I would not be able to do any of this without ALL of you. I am so grateful.

  • Discovering a little shop in town that sells incense and homemade essential oils and soaps.

  • Getting a flat tire and then getting another flat in the spare tire and having two amazing people help me each time - including Eddie driving me to tire store and back and changing the tire for me. He loved telling me about his dogs and his hometown in St. Lucia.

  • Watching a little baby chick following its mom, never more than two inches away from her.

  • A new friend I met at post office asking if I ever want to pick some pomegranates off his fruit trees - he is retired and loves to garden.

  • Stumbling upon guy singing and playing acoustic guitar at a little outdoor cafe at 10:30am on a Saturday morning. I was killing time so I was able to sit down and listen and enjoy. He played two songs I was surprised to hear, from one of my favorite little random bands - Devil Makes Three. If you are interested, here is one he played.Of course I had to approach him "dude, Devil Makes Three! Hell yea." His reply "Yeah, I saw you freaking out when I started playing them..." So I'm just making friends left and right, not awkward at all. Everything's fine.

  • Then, of course, I always enjoy watching Harley playing on the rocks and in the tide pools. This morning he was kind of, a little bit, slammed by a wave... he got right back up again and shook it off. My little tough guy.

  • If you are craving more photos of this magical place, watch this video I compiled from the first time I visited St. Croix. It was love at first sight. Turn up your volume, sit back and relax (virgin piña colada optional).
